Mong-Lan’s one-woman show starts with her roots in Saigon, and travels through war and discrimination as a refugee in the U.S. She finds the tango, finds the Other through the dance of passion, jealousy, and ardor.  Mong-Lan tells her story through poems, accompanied by jazz piano, guitar, and singing. Projections of her photos and paintings are interspersed throughout. Humorous and cathartic

KYOTO JOURNAL - THE ASIAN FACE OF WAR -
Gaining Perspectives from Both Sides: A Look at WWII, Vietnam, and Korea

How does literature remain conversant with the history of war in Asia? Why does it remain vital and relevant? Seventy years after WWII, and forty years after the fall of Saigon, writers whose work was published in Kyoto Journal and who write out of an awareness of war gather to address questions of war and literature’s ongoing response to it. Four writers, some based outside the United States, speak to Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese literature in light of history and war and share their poetry and stories.

Words, Movement, Music & Chance: A New Writing Workshop

Can movement and music enhance your writing? How can you use chance and synchronicity as strategies to inform your writing? Although writing is often thought of as a quiet, solitary, sedentary activity, improvisational movement and active listening can ground us in the present, helping us write more freely and with more invention. In this workshop, we will stretch our bodies, move to music, listen to music and its rhythms, consider chance and synchronicity, and move to expand our imaginations and generate new and interesting creative work. We will do close readings of poetry, fiction, and prose, and create our own work through instructor-led writing exercises.

Panel: Mapping New Territories: Diasporic Writers from Regions of Conflict
Description: In last few years, we've seen a rise in global conflicts (The protests in Cairo during Arab Spring & self-immolation of Tibetan monks in China). Diasporic writers, such as Asian & Arab American writers, have had a profound & conflicted response to what's happening in their places of origin. Our panel features four notable writers discussing what “territory” might be, both literally & metaphorically, & what role their work plays in engaging with social & political dynamics across the world.

One Thousand Minds Brimming by Mong-Lan

Workshop-- Make the Words Dance:

How to Write with Rhythm and Movement

Mong-Lan Jung Center Does writing have to be a static, silent practice? The cliché involves a writer hunched over her notepad or laptop, toiling alone and nearly motionless for days at a time. But writing always involves movement—the blood in our veins, the breath in our lungs, and the movement through imaginal space and time that is the creative process. It also involves rhythms that are unique to each writer. In this innovative workshop, we will explore how our writing process can be enhanced and expanded through movement and music. We will break our writing down into rhythms, and we will dare to get up from the desk and move as we learn new ways to develop a more meditative, grounded writing practice. No writing experience is necessary.

Writing and the Visual Arts: Techniques to Release
Your Inner Genius

Explore different ways of connecting with your inner genius
through writing, drawing, and creating. What and how do you see,
and how does this inform your writing? We will be training the eye
and the hand by drawing a still life and using this as a jumping pad
to write poems. We will explore the world drawn with your hands,
the world that is seen and unseen. Working with automatic writing,
ekphrasis (a literary description of a visual work of art) and other
techniques, we will talk about poetics and generate new ways of
writing. We will unleash the power of the unconscious to create
works that are relevant to our own lives and those of others.

Writing Poetry through Dance & Drawing

Break through to your fountain of creativity with Mong-Lan.

Write poetry from your body; dance from the heart; draw from your mind’s eye and from your imagination. Explore different ways of connecting with your inner core through what you see with your eyes, the world drawn with your hands. Unleash writers block through dance & art.

We will be exploring movements from dance and the tango, and writing from what these movements bring to mind. We will be moving alone to music and with a partner. No dancing experience needed! The dance moves are to bring back memories to you, buried memories. What does your body say to you? Are you in touch with your body? What does your mind say when you are going through certain movements? What memories come to mind from the depths of your cells? We will use the dance movements as jumping pads from which to write poems.

Bring your drawing pen/pencil and drawing pad! No drawing experience needed! Now that we have looked inside your body for inspiration, let’s look outside of the body. Have you really looked at the world recently? Have you ever drawn a still life to see what shapes and forms are in front of you? What do you see, and how does this inform your writing? We will be drawing a still life, training the eye and the hand, and using this as a jumping pad to write poems.

Painting by Mong-Lan

"Fountain of Tango," acrylic on canvas, 100cm x 100cm

Mong-Lan (“Dream Orchid”) once again brings us her world of the tango, full of passion, on canvas: the interior world of dreams and powerful emotions and the exterior world of movement, song and dance. Born in Vietnam, American painter Mong-Lan captures the profound soul of tango on canvas. Dancers move through space, the physical space of the dance floor and the canvas as well as the heart’s emotional space. Half of her large canvases depict the abstract interior world of desire, of love, passion, injustice, jealousy, pain, and the intense color clothe it. Strong reds, oranges, yellows, blues, dominate the work. Her canvases are large, each piece measuring one meter at the longest side. Her brushwork of dancers resonates with the master calligraphic brushwork of Asia. Mong-Lan is also a poet and writer, with at least four books to her name, the most recent, Tango, Tangoing: Poems & Art (Tango, Tangueando: Poemas & Dibujos: la edición bilingüe). She is also a dancer and teacher of Argentine tango.
